NCG: Thermal Design Engineer Juniper Networks – US CA Sunnyvale

Juniper Networks is a leading provider of networking hardware and systems, headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA.

Juniper has an immediate need at its Sunnyvale, CA location for a highly skilled and experienced senior thermal engineer within our Mechanical Analysis group. This position reports to the Manager of Mechanical Analysis, a subgroup of Juniper’s Mechanical Engineering department. The main objective of this group is to apply principles of mechanical engineering analysis to develop practical solutions to the very demanding requirements for Juniper products, and to support the design group in ensuring that those solutions are properly implemented.

The selected candidate will be a key member of the thermal analysis team, responsible for all aspects of thermal design and analysis of Juniper products including: negotiating thermal and related mechanical and electrical product requirements; performing thermal feasibility studies; developing and/or contributing to conceptual architectures that meet system requirements; performing detailed technical thermal analysis and simulation including airflow analysis; detailed specification of thermal components such as heat sinks, air movers, thermal interface materials, adhesives, etc.; developing practical solutions to severe thermal challenges; preparing and/or reviewing test plans and supervising tests; detailed technical peer review of the work of other members of the thermal analysis; participation in strategic decisions between engineering and Business Unit leadership; support and participation of advanced technology development; providing oversight to engineering and product testing activities; and other special projects as required.

Qualified candidates should have a minimum of 3+ years of experience complex electronic systems design including at least 1-3 years in detailed thermal analysis and design, and at least 4 New Product Introduction (NPI) development cycles. Expert-level knowledge of air-cooled electronics design, including the selection and application of air-moving devices suitable for dense electronics assemblies exhibiting substantial pressure loss is required. Extensive familiarity with the specification and application of all types of heat sinks is essential, including familiarity with embedded heat pipe and vapor chamber type sinks. This product oriented position also requires familiarity the various types and proper application of Thermal Interface Materials (TIMs) to product designs. Computer industry experience is highly relevant; however aerospace, medical device industry or other industry experience demanding a disciplined approach is also appropriate for this role. Knowledge of thermal aspects of ASIC package design is a plus.

Ability to model complex flow and heat transfer systems in either ICEPAK or FloTHERM is required. Knowledge of both systems is a plus. Familiarity with SolidWORKS CAD software (or a similar system such as Pro/E) is needed to enable the selected candidate to view and manipulate CAD models from the design group as required. This role does not involve extensive CAD design work. The individual contributor is expected to work with design engineers to solve problems, improve thermal design performance, and ensure that the final engineering design meets thermal requirements.

A sound working knowledge of lab methods is required. Actual lab technician work is not a primary responsibility of this senior level role, however technical oversight of technicians and other engineers conducting such lab work is required.

Excellent communication skills are an important requirement for this position. The selected candidate is expected to bring a disciplined and thorough approach to assignments, including the preparation of well-organized reports and concise but complete presentations. Juniper Thermal Team members are required to work as team members with mechanical, electrical, and system design engineers.

A minimum of a BSME is required, with an advanced degree considered a plus. 3+ years of engineering experience in the design of complex electronics systems is required, with at least 5 years of direct involvement in thermal engineering.

Experience with shock and vibration analysis of electronic systems, including finite element analysis, is not specifically required for this position but is considered a definite plus.

Juniper Networks offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and capability, along with an excellent benefits package, to qualified Candidates.
