General Information:

The Northwest Mexico operating area of TransCanada’s TGNN company is seeking an Instrument and Controls Technician to work at the El Encino Compressor station and surrounding area. The successful candidate will work on a team that operates and maintains a high pressure natural gas pipeline system, turbine driven compressor station, gas measurement equipment and other related facilities and is subject to hazardous conditions including; escaping high pressure gas, adverse weather conditions, working from heights, heavy lifting and cramped conditions. This position is overtime eligible and extended work hours may be required on occasion without advance notice including nights, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Activities may include but are not limited to: Operation, maintenance and repair of pipeline, compression, gas process measurement equipment, control systems, end devices (pressure, temperature, vibration, gas and fire detection), telecommunications equipment, valves and operators, regulators, relief valves, blow down purging and pressurization of pipelines and stations, and performing line locates on company pipelines; all within company operating procedures;
  • Actively participates in a team environment by acquiring and applying required qualifications, supporting the development of team members, performing administrative duties and assisting with planning, problem solving, prioritization and decision making processes;
  • Safely perform all work activities including operate company vehicle;
  • Analyze turbine performance reports, initiate corrective action to review and improve maintenance procedures;
  • Read, interpret and update drawings and schematics (P&ID and electrical);
  • Properly use a variety of hand and power tools;
  • Utilize diagnostic tools such as volt-ohm meters, ammeters, and oscilloscopes;
  • Utilize computers and e-mail for internal and external communication, record keeping, on-line reporting, material and supply ordering and filing of various forms;
  • Utilize computers to interface with various PLCs and controllers. Be familiar with various communications protocols, (RS232, RS485, and Ethernet over copper and fiber optic media);
  • Performs other tasks as defined by the team, and maintains general housekeeping and appearance of assigned team facilities;
  • Other tasks as required.

Qualifications and Education:

Qualifications and Abilities:

  • Experience with controls and measurement systems and instrumentation including but not limited to: pressure, temperature, flow, and vibration transmitters, gas and fire detection, pressure regulating equipment and valve operators;
  • Ability to troubleshoot, operate and maintain turbine driven gas compressors, standby generators, oil coolers, air compressors, cooler fans and gear boxes, valves and operators and other auxiliary equipment;
  • Candidate must exhibit a sense of urgency, individual responsibility and a willingness to accept constantly changing priorities;
  • Must be qualified or able to qualify in, and to advance individual skills as assigned/required by team within defined deadlines;
  • Effective written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills to work in a collaborative team environment that includes; shared responsibilities, establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others to support team and company objectives and a willingness to work in all areas i.e. controls, mechanical, pipeline, or measurement as required by team;
  • May be required to travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings and training involving some overnight stays away from home;
  • Subject to call out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and extended workdays and/or workweeks for emergency response purposes;
  • Will be required to carry a cell phone and to work a rotating on-call schedule;
  • Must have a strong safety attitude and be environmentally responsible.

Education:

  • Associates degree including courses in electrical and pneumatic troubleshooting. (Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education);
  • Knowledge of electronic and electrical test equipment use for troubleshooting with associated equipment such as transmitters, switches, pressure and temperature end devices;
  • Relevant oil and gas industry experience would be desired;
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English would be an asset;
  • Industrial experience in a plant environment would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of Safety Programs requirements also beneficial.
